Selsdon Park Hotel was ‘famous’. Sir Edward Heath, leader of the Conservative opposition, had held a brainstorming session at the hotel to formulate policies for the 1970 Election . The result was a radical free market agenda, condemned by the then Labour Prime Minister as the work of "Selsdon Man". Heath won the election but had to abandoned his policies in the face of bitter opposition from the trade unions. This historic u-turn led to the formation of the Selsdon Group which exists to promote the case for free market policies within the Conservative Party. It believes that economic freedom is the indispensable condition for political and social freedom. Conservatives then were more like USA Democrats whereas the Selsdon Group is like the USA GOP.
