Ken Sheffield says "Both tune and dance have obvious similarities to 'Portsmouth' as detailed in the Country Dance Book Volume 6 (Playford 11th edn, 1701). In this form, however the dance uses four strains of music instead of three."

Michael Barraclough says "Ken Sheffield's comment refers to Cecil Sharp's 24-bar interpretation of Portsmouth, which most people now consider to be in error. Ken Sheffield's interpretation condenses the original triple minor dance to a duple minor and therefore requires the heys in A1/A2 to be modified.
